Math in the Montessori classroom can be described as an easy and joyful assimilation of the facts and skills of arithmetic. This is accomplished by using a variety of unique and interesting mathematical manipulatives and concrete materials. Through the processes of separating, sharing, counting, and comparing, children learn enumeration and the basic operations. Instead of rote memorization, children learn basic facts simply by performing operations, working problems with appropriate materials, and recording their results. These operations can be performed with a variety of materials, which give them many opportunities for necessary repetition, but also guarantees that they will remain interested and engaged.
